StarTeam History

Forty-four years of the StarTeam — from eight founders at Heliopause to the coalition that holds the Comet Road's neutrality. All invented in-world history.

The founding (STC 0)

Eight founders — scouts, pilots, and relay engineers — signed the StarTeam Charter at Heliopause Station in STC 0. They had different reasons and one agreement: a volunteer coalition of deep-space explorers, answering to no faction, charging no one for a rescue. The Charter’s first article — “No traveler is left in the dark” — has never been amended.

The founders’ names are recorded in the Lumin Archive’s Codex of the Charter: among them the navigator Ilya Sorren, whose lost survey logs Amara would later study obsessively, and the engineer Petra Halloran, who built Heliopause’s still-running core.

The relay age (STC 0–20)

The StarTeam’s first two decades were the relay age: building the network of stations that made deep space survivable — the inner relays, the long slow lanes across the Reach, and finally the great gamble, the Outer Relay beyond the Veil Nebula, built by the Relay Guild at enormous cost and reachable only by a slow dogleg around the Veil. The StarTeam grew from eight founders to a fleet, and its navigators became legends of the slow lanes.

The Driftborn accords (STC 12)

In STC 12 the StarTeam signed its first accords with the Driftborn clans, recognizing the nomadic peoples’ right of free passage and their ownership of their private ephemerides. The accords are why, decades later, Amara — herself Driftborn — could walk into the deep clans’ councils at Cold Ember and be heard.

The Cole Passage era (STC 27–34)

Amara’s charting of the Cole Passage in STC 27 ended the Veil’s century as a wall and began the StarTeam’s golden age of exploration: the Outer Relay properly supplied for the first time, the deep surveys, the Meridian Way trade lane. Recruitment tripled. The academy’s navigation hall filled with cadets who had all read the same story: the unknown drift-runner who handed the StarTeam a road for free.

The Comet Road and the blockade (STC 34–37)

The Comet Road discovery (STC 34) was the StarTeam’s greatest triumph and its greatest crisis. The Road made the coalition the unquestioned power of the outer dark — and made it the target of the Umbral Combine, which had controlled the old slow lanes and lost everything overnight. The blockade of the Outer Relay (STC 35–37), the first combat void-skip, the Silent Relay rescue — the StarTeam’s hardest years, and the years that proved the Charter meant what it said.

The truce (STC 41)

The Battle of the Shattered Reach could have been the StarTeam’s first full war. Instead, Amara’s negotiation produced the Driftborn truce: the Comet Road declared neutral water, open to every traveler, owned by none. The truce holds to this day — the StarTeam’s founding principle, written across the sky in comet light.

The present (STC 44)

The StarTeam today: a fleet of scout ships, the academy at Heliopause, the relay network, and the standing promise. The Second Comet Road expedition is being planned. The Umbral Combine is still watching. And in the charter hall, new navigators still swear the Scout’s oath: to chart truly, to share charts freely, and to leave no traveler in the dark.
