Glossary
Every term in Amara's universe, defined. All definitions are invented fan lore for a fictional setting.
Star-sense
Amara’s innate eidetic spatial memory for the sky — the positions, colors, and motions of tens of thousands of stars, held as a living mental model. See Abilities.
Void-skip
A short-range gravity-slingshot maneuver that jumps a ship across a blind gap no chart covers. Brutally unforgiving; Amara performed the first combat void-skip in STC 35.
Comet-riding
Sailing the plasma currents along a comet’s tail — the skill the Comet Road discovery was built on, and one no one else in the StarTeam can match.
Comet Road
The chain of long-period comets — Liora, Vesper’s Tear, the Lantern Twins, Cold Ember — whose synchronized perihelia form a navigable current across the Shattered Reach. Discovered by Amara in STC 34. Neutral water under the Driftborn truce.
Cole Passage
The navigable lane Amara charted through the Veil Nebula in STC 27, giving the StarTeam its road to the Outer Relay.
Starlume Astrolabe
Amara’s signature instrument: a brass-and-violet-glass astrolabe etched with six generations of Cole family star charts, given to her by her grandmother Yara in STC 21.
Kestrel Drift
The nomadic habitat cluster where Amara was born — domed habitats, tethered skiffs, and one old chart-barge, riding the tail-wake of Comet Liora. Home to the Driftborn.
Driftborn
The nomadic clans who live aboard moving habitat clusters. They measure distance in orbits and time in perihelia, and consider stillness a kind of death.
Heliopause Station
StarTeam headquarters — the last deep-space relay before the dark, where the Charter was signed in STC 0.
Veil Nebula
The vast nebula that walled off the Outer Relay for a century, until Amara charted the Cole Passage through it.
Shattered Reach
The debris field between the inner relays and the outer dark. Crossed in years before the Comet Road; in weeks after.
Outer Relay
The far relay station beyond the Veil Nebula, built by the Relay Guild and reachable via the Cole Passage.
Silent Relay
An old listening post cut off during the Umbral blockade; its forty crew were evacuated by Amara in STC 37.
Umbral Combine
The shadow cartel that controlled the old slow lanes across the Reach. Lost its monopoly to the Comet Road; has never forgiven Amara. Primary antagonist faction.
Relay Guild
The engineers and operators who build and maintain the relay stations. Neutral, meticulous, and quietly indispensable.
Lumin Archive
The archivists who preserve star charts, survey logs, and mission records — including the in-world “sources” cited on this site.
STC
“StarTeam Charter” — the in-world calendar, counted from the signing of the Charter at Heliopause Station. The present day in Amara’s stories is STC 44.
Meridian
The SS Meridian — the StarTeam’s fastest deep-range scout starship, and Amara’s ship as First Navigator.
Lumen Sextant
Amara’s wrist-mounted backup instrument — a compact sextant for when the astrolabe is out of reach. A gift from Cass Arden.
Comet Liora
The great comet whose tail-wake carries the Kestrel Drift — and the first comet of the Comet Road chain. Amara was born in its light.
Lantern Twins
A pair of comets whose tails braid and unbraid in a complex cycle. Amara mapped the braid in STC 24; the Twins are the second link of the Comet Road.
Vesper’s Tear
A long-period comet surveyed by Amara in STC 34 — the survey during which she recognized the Comet Road pattern.
Cold Ember
A sacred comet of the Driftborn deep clans, site of first contact in STC 32 and the fourth link of the Comet Road.
Meridian Way
The trade lane Amara mapped between the inner relays, named for her ship.
Chart-room
The navigation heart of a starship — holographic chart tables, ephemeris engines, and one navigator who never sleeps enough.
Drift-chart
A Driftborn star chart: not a picture of where things are, but a prediction of where they will be. Drawn to be redrawn.
Void-lattice
The theoretical framework navigators use to model gravity wells for void-skips — part mathematics, part art, part nerve.
Light-lag
The delay between a star’s light leaving and arriving. Star-sense navigators correct for it instinctively; instruments do it the slow way.
Gravity well
The region of gravitational influence around a mass. Void-skips are flown at the edges of wells, where the math is sharpest and the margin thinnest.
Perihelion chain
A sequence of comets reaching perihelion — closest approach to their star — in synchronized order. The Comet Road is the only known navigable perihelion chain.
Scout’s oath
The StarTeam navigator’s oath, sworn on the Charter: to chart truly, to share charts freely, and to leave no traveler in the dark.
Kael Vex
Amara’s rival — an ex-StarTeam navigator who sells charts to the Umbral Combine. Profiled in Allies & Rivals.
