The five-minute briefing — who Zelenskyy is, how he got here, and how to use this site.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy in five minutes
The comedian (1978–2018). Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy was born 25 January 1978 in Kryvyi Rih, in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He trained as a lawyer but never practiced, and instead built a career in comedy: first in student KVN competitions, then with the troupe Kvartal 95, which grew into one of Ukraine’s largest television production studios. From 2015 to 2019 he starred in Servant of the People, a sitcom in which he played a schoolteacher accidentally elected president of Ukraine.
The president (2019–2022). On 31 December 2018 he announced he would run for the actual presidency. He won the 21 April 2019 runoff with about 73% of the vote, defeating incumbent Petro Poroshenko, and was inaugurated on 20 May 2019. His early presidency covered the Trump phone-call controversy, a Normandy-format summit with Putin, Macron and Merkel in Paris, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Details: 2019 Election, Early Presidency.
The wartime leader (2022– ). When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, Zelenskyy remained in Kyiv, declared martial law, and began the nightly video addresses that made him internationally known. He has since addressed dozens of parliaments, presented a 10-point peace formula, and led Ukraine’s wartime diplomacy. Details: Wartime Leadership, Wartime Addresses, Peace Formula.
The name. The real person’s name is spelled Zelenskyy in English — that spelling is used throughout the reference pages. The Vizlings app’s animated character is spelled “Zelenski”; that spelling appears only for the character, the site title, and the stream page.
