Personal Life

The private life of a very public figure — family, background, and what he keeps out of view.

Family

Zelenskyy married Olena Zelenska (née Kiyashko) in 2003. An architect by training, she worked as a screenwriter with Kvartal 95 before becoming First Lady in 2019. They have two children: daughter Oleksandra (born 2004) and son Kyrylo (born 2013).

The family has remained in Ukraine throughout the war — a fact Zelenskyy and Zelenska have both stated publicly, and which international profiles have widely reported. Beyond that, Zelenskyy keeps his children out of public view, and this reference follows that boundary: there is nothing more to report here, and nothing is invented.

Parents and background

His father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy, is a professor of cybernetics; his mother, Rymma Zelenska, worked as an engineer. He grew up in Kryvyi Rih, with a childhood period in Mongolia where his father worked.

Jewish heritage

Zelenskyy is Jewish — a background he has discussed publicly, including references to his family’s Second World War history in wartime addresses. His election in 2019 made him Ukraine’s first Jewish president, a fact widely noted in international coverage, including in the context of his 2022 addresses drawing on Holocaust history.

Faith and private views

Zelenskyy rarely discusses personal faith in detail. This page does not speculate about his private beliefs.

Olena Zelenska’s public role

While this page is about private life, Zelenska’s wartime public role is a matter of record: her July 2022 address to the U.S. Congress, her mental-health and education initiatives, and her advocacy for the return of Ukrainian children deported to Russia. The details belong to her own public record; they are noted here because they are inseparable from the family’s wartime story.
