The Vineyard Terraces
Rows of grapes falling toward the sea, and the toast that ends every summer. The vineyard terraces are where Rafael Moretti's year comes full circle. Creative interpretation.
Creative interpretation
The terraces
Stone-walled rows cascade down the hillside toward the water — purple and green grapes heavy in the golden light, the sea glinting at the bottom of the hill. The vines belong to half the town collectively and are argued over by all of it, lovingly.
The harvest
Late summer: baskets, ladders (Rafael’s technique still under review — see The Olive Harvest), and the year’s best light. Rafael’s official role is morale. His unofficial role is tasting. Both are performed with total commitment.
The toast
At sunset on the last harvest day, the town gathers on the top terrace. Rafael raises the first glass — always the same words, and the town would riot if he changed them:
“Salt air cures everything. Wine cures the rest.”
Then everyone drinks, the string lights come on, and somebody starts the music. Rafael dances. (See The Night Market for a description the town stands by.)
Why it matters
It’s the year’s full circle: dawn fishing to harvest toast, storm to calm, work to celebration. Rafael’s philosophy in one evening — the sea provides, the town shares, the light is golden, and tomorrow there will be coffee at sunrise.
