The Olive Harvest
Autumn in the old grove: silvery trees, woven baskets, and the only authority Rafael Moretti has never once argued with. Creative interpretation.
Creative interpretation
The grove
Above the town, ancient olive trees silver the hillside — some of them older than the lighthouse, all of them under the absolute rule of Nonna Elvira. Every October the town climbs the hill with ladders and baskets, and Rafael is always there: strong back, weak discipline, bottomless appetite.
The work
The method: spread the nets, shake the branches, gather the fallen fruit. Rafael’s method: shake with excessive enthusiasm, eat a professional taster’s share, get scolded by Elvira, repeat. His ladder technique has been “under review” for a decade. His heart is not in question; his focus is.
The law of Elvira
Three rules, enforced without appeal:
- The first pressing goes to the town, not to any one table.
- Nobody picks in the rain — the trees are older than you and they say so.
- Rafael eats after his basket is full. (This rule is broken annually and forgiven annually.)
The pressing
At dusk the harvest goes to the old stone press, and the first oil of the year is tasted on warm bread with everyone standing around in the golden light. Rafael always claims he can taste which trees he shook. Elvira always says he cannot. The bread, all agree, is perfect.
