The Regatta
One race, one old boat, one torn mainsail, one legendary win. The Porto Chiaro summer regatta is Rafael Moretti's annual appointment with glory — creative interpretation.
Creative interpretation
The race
Every August, Porto Chiaro closes the quay and the bay fills with sails. The course: out past Faro Point, around the Gull Rock buoy, and back — about nine nautical miles of showing off. Rafael has raced the Solenne every year since her rebuild, with a crew assembled from whoever was at the cantina the night before.
The torn mainsail year
The legend: three years ago the Solenne’s mainsail tore on the reach to Gull Rock. Any sensible captain would have retired. Rafael looked at the rip, looked at the wind, and said, “The wind doesn’t know it’s torn.” He won by half a boat length, sailed straight to the boatyard, and didn’t mention the sail until Marco found it. The crew of the Vittoria — perennial runners-up — dispute the story annually. The town believes it annually.
The rivalry
The Vittoria is newer, faster, and better funded. Her skipper, Dario, is Rafael’s friend off the water and his nemesis on it. The pre-race week is a festival of sabotage-by-kindness: Dario sends over pastries; Rafael sends back fishing advice that is technically correct and strategically useless.
Race day, Rafael-style
- Dawn: coffee on deck, suspiciously calm.
- Start: always late to the line, always making it look deliberate.
- The reach: where the Solenne — heavy, old, honest — finds her groove.
- The finish: grin visible from the cliffs.
