Glossary
The words Rafael thinks in — winds, boats, and harbor life. General sailing vocabulary; Rafael's particular usage is creative interpretation.
Winds
Scirocco
The hot wind from the south. Brings haze, restlessness, and Rafael’s worst decisions.
Maestrale
The strong northwest wind. Clears the sky, whitens the caps, and makes Rafael grin like a flag.
Grecale
Northeast wind, sharp and honest. “A grecale never lies,” says Luca.
Libeccio
Southwest wind, moody and theatrical. Rafael respects it and sails around it.
Sea states
Bonaccia
The dead calm — glassy water, no wind, the whole harbor napping. Rafael is physically incapable of enjoying it for more than an hour.
Boats & harbor
Gozzo
The classic wooden fishing boat of the coast — what Rafael learned on, what Luca still rows.
Ormeggio
A mooring, a berth. “Home is a berth that remembers your name” — see Quotes.
Faro
Lighthouse. The one at Faro Point is Rafael’s church. See The Lighthouse.
Vela
A sail — and by extension, the whole art. “Full sail” is Rafael’s favorite speed; the other one is asleep.
Cantina
The harborside tavern — specifically the Cantina del Porto, the crew’s headquarters.
Town life
Sagra
A festival, usually involving food. The harvest sagra ends every summer at the vineyard terraces.
Sciabica
The beach seine net, hauled by hand at dawn — Rafael’s least favorite and most character-building chore.
