Materials
Sheet metal
Aluminum for big indoor shapes (light, forgiving), tin for maquettes, brass for the chime studies. Steel only when the wind has earned it.
Black steel wire
The skeleton of everything. Gauges from thread-fine to pencil-thick. Bought in coils, straightened by hand, bent by instinct.
Enamel paint
Mobile red, mobile blue, mobile yellow — mixed to Nico’s private formulas — plus wire black. Glossy, because matte is “afraid of the light.”
Counterweights
Lead discs, washers, and one famous fishing sinker. The unsung heroes: invisible in the final piece, responsible for all of it.
Tools of note
- Gerald — the ancient drill press. Named, patted, and blamed in equal measure.
- The good pliers — never lent, never lost (knock on the bench).
- Ribbon streamers — the window weather station. Low-tech, unbeatable.
- The gust notebook — part logbook, part diary, part wind-chasing scripture.
- Neck pillows — for viewers of Seventeen Wires. Hospitality is part of the medium.
People ask about my tools like they’re the secret. The secret is the window. Open it. Wait. The air will tell you what it wants to carry — my whole job is just making sure it’s beautiful when it does.
