Speculation zoneFan Theories

Creative interpretation — all theories below are fan speculation, ranked by how well they hold air. None are canon; there is no canon to contradict.

The surname question

Theory: it’s not a coincidence

Plausibility: high. A kinetic mobile sculptor named Calder? Fans are split between “the app named him after Alexander Calder on purpose” and “in-universe, Nico leans into it as a joke.” The site’s interpretation goes with the joke: Nico claims it’s a coincidence with a straight face no one believes.

The pigeon was hired

Theory: Petra sent the pigeon

Plausibility: low, joy: high. No evidence whatsoever that rival Petra Voss trained a pigeon to destroy an outdoor mobile. Substantial evidence that the fandom will never let this go. Nico’s official position: “The pigeon is innocent until proven guilty, and I will be prosecuting no further.”

Gerald is haunted (affectionate)

Theory: the drill press knows things

Plausibility: unmeasurable. Every studio has a tool that works better when patted and worse when rushed. Fans maintain Gerald the drill press is “slightly haunted, in a supportive way.” Nico neither confirms nor denies, and pats Gerald daily.

The Night of Still Air works

Theory: the festival changes the weather

Plausibility: medium, anecdotally. Three years running, a breeze has arrived within an hour of the midnight door-opening. Meteorologists cite “August night patterns.” Fans cite “the mobiles calling it in.” Nico cites nothing and smiles like a man who knows something.

My favorite theory is that I’m somebody’s ceiling-fan incident — that I only exist because the air needed something to move. Honestly? Best review I’ve ever gotten. Tell whoever thought of it: the air says thanks.
