For fansFan Guide
So the wind blew you here. Here’s how to be a Nico Calder fan — the fun kind, the kind he’d like.
Start with the air
Nico is a character about attention: to drafts, to balance, to the way light moves through a room. The fastest way into his world is physical: hang something — anything, a paper crane on thread — near a window, and watch it for ten minutes. Congratulations, you’ve had your first studio day.
Things fans make
- Maquettes: paper-and-thread mini-mobiles. Post them with your gust notes (date, wind speed, what the air wanted).
- Gust sketches: thirty-second drawings made during actual gusts. The worse the drawing, the better the story.
- Wall of Almost shelves: your own failed projects, displayed with failure notes. Nico’s fandom has the kindest failure culture on the internet.
- Palette studies: four colors only — red, blue, yellow, black. See how much you can say.
Keep it honest
The fan canon rule
Everything beyond the name “Nico Calder” is fan interpretation, and the fandom says so out loud — every time. Tag your lore interpretation, your dialogue character voice, and your art AI-generated dramatization (or whatever it actually is). The blank canvas is the gift. Don’t forge the signature.
Meet other fans
The in-lore gathering is the Night of Still Air watch party: fans lower their own mobiles (or drawings of them) on the calmest night of August, sit with them in silence, and release them at midnight local time. Photos optional. Wind mandatory.
Best fan mail I ever got was a photo of a paper mobile hanging in a dorm window. The note said: “The air in my room is boring, so I gave it something to do.” That’s it. That’s the whole fandom. Give the air something to do.
