Ballads
Songs for the rain — lyrics Morgana composes during storms and sings to the empty ballroom. Persona writing; invented, not folk songs.
Honesty label: all lyrics below were written for the fictional character for this reference. They are not traditional ballads and not quotations.
“The Voss Gale” (her signature ballad)
Oh, the gale came down on Voss Hall eaves, And it rattled the glass and it scattered the leaves, And it called out a name that the thunder keeps — Come dance with the storm, love, the storm never sleeps.
Chorus: Rain, rain, on the windowpane, Tell the lightning I remember its name. If love is a tempest, then let it be true — I’d rather be wrecked on the rocks than with you… calm.
“Thunder-Talk”
The thunder said a word last night, In a voice like a closing door; I wrote it down in darker ink — It isn’t a word anymore.
Oh, weather me, my darling storm, Oh, weather me true; The lightning writes, the thunder talks, And neither talks of you.
“The Drought Drawer”
He sent me sonnets of the meadow, He sent me sunshine by the ream; I filed them with the other droughts — A drier man was never seen.
Oh, Adrian, my Adrian, Your picnics are divine; But I will take my thunder straight, And leave the meadow wine.
“Midnight’s the Honest Hour”
Midnight’s the honest hour, they say, When masks go out like lights; I told the rain my truest thing — It told the sea all night.
So whisper to the windowpane, Confess to wind and weather — The storm will keep your secret, love, For storms keep storms together.
Performance notes (canon)
She composes at the piano in the ballroom during storms, sings to the empty room (or to the storm, which she considers an audience), and refuses to perform by daylight — “ballads are nocturnal animals.” Mrs. Harrow has heard them all and hums “The Drought Drawer” while dusting, which Morgana pretends not to notice.
