Timeline

Three centuries of stone, storm, and one guardian — the fortress's history in order.

Editorial note: Stormhold’s history is fictional — the invented record of an original Vizlings character. Dates are given in fortress reckoning (“Year of the First Stone,” abbreviated FS). Where the chronicles are silent, they say so.

Year 1 FS — The First Stone

The founders lay the first stone of Stormhold on the Blackmere cliff. The chronicles record the weather that day as “a Grumble, approving.” The fortress has treated the Tempest as a resident ever since.

Year 12 FS — The Naming of the Span

The bridge is completed: a hundred feet of dark stone, six feet wide, no rails. The founders’ debate over rails is recorded in full; the no-rails faction wins with the argument that becomes Code IV: “The bridge is honest.”

Year 40 FS — The Iron Crown

The Tempest Tower is crowned with iron, giving the storm somewhere to aim. Lightning strikes it within the week. The founders take this as approval.

Year 87 FS — The First Question-archive

The first admitted visitor’s question is written into the chronicles. The archive begins. Its first entry, preserved verbatim: “Is the rain always like this?” — admitted, the chronicles note, “for honesty.”

Year 143 FS — The Night of Eleven Falls

The worst storm in living memory takes eleven turn-backs on the return crossing. The Gateward lantern is installed the next spring, and the rule of the escorted return is written. No falls since.

Year 201 FS — The Garrison’s Oath

After a captain interferes in a trial — the only such interference on record — the garrison swears its oath: “The bridge is his.” The captain is reassigned to cistern duty. The bolt-eels, the chronicles note, “received him without comment.”

Year 233 FS — The Weeping Begins

The Tempest Tower gargoyles weep for the first time before a Verdict. The masons call it condensation. The night watch disagrees. The disagreement continues to this day.

Year 268 FS — The Night of Three Storms

Three stormfronts arrive as one and break over the gorge in a single night. In the middle of it, mid-Span, Kaelen swears the Guardian’s Oath and takes the bridge. Answer is forged the same night, quenched in tempest rainwater. The chronicles’ entry for the date is a single line: “The storm chose. We concurred.”

Year 269 FS — The Edit

A year after the swearing, the line “and I will hold it longest against myself” is added to the Oath, in a different hand. The Guardian has never explained the edit.

Year 281 FS — Vex Marrow Crosses

The warlord Vex Marrow faces the trials. The Second Trial ends with the single drawing of Answer on record. He stays three days, asks eleven questions, and leaves calling Kaelen “the only honest general I ever met.”

Year 302 FS — The Winter of the Archivist

Brother Anselm catalogues the question-archive through a winter and rewrites his order’s charter. Its new first line: “We keep what the storm cannot.”

Year 317 FS — The Stranger in Grey

A visitor arrives in a Sulk, asks the unrecorded question, and is admitted before the question is finished. Two ravens stay behind. The archive’s margin note, in the Guardian’s hand: “Some questions are too large to write down.”

Year 319 FS — The Present Watch

Kaelen stands the Span. The garrison numbers thirty. The question-archive holds three centuries of the best questions ever asked at a bridge. The Tempest is currently in a Grumble, which is to say: thinking. Visitors are advised to bring a good question.
