The Storm Fortress
Stormhold — one fortress, one bridge, and a storm that never fully leaves.
Stormhold
Stormhold is a fortress of dark slate and black iron set on a cliff above the Blackmere gorge, in the Grey Reaches. Rain strikes it in sheets eleven months of the year; the twelfth month is merely damp. Its towers are crooked by design — the fortress’s builders set them leaning into the wind, a fact the masons’ guild of the lowlands calls madness and the garrison calls obvious.
The fortress has three walls, four towers, and exactly one door that matters: the gate at the far end of the Span. The rest is cliff, weather, and the long drop into the gorge.
The districts
- The Gateward — the cliff-side approach, where visitors wait in the rain before the First Trial. A single stone bench, one lantern, no roof. By design.
- The Span — the bridge itself (the bridge). Technically not part of the fortress; spiritually, its front door.
- The Bailey of Rain — the open courtyard past the gate, where garrison drills happen in weather that would cancel everyone else’s war.
- The Tempest Tower — the tallest crooked tower, where Kaelen listens to the storm. No one else goes up. The stairs are his business.
- The Quiet Cells — small stone rooms for visitors who passed the trials and stayed the night. They are always dry, always warm, and no visitor has ever been able to explain why.
- The Underhold — storage, cisterns, the garrison’s winter stores. Also, according to the bestiary, the bolt-eels (fortress bestiary).
The garrison
Stormhold keeps a small garrison — never more than thirty souls. They maintain the walls, feed the lanterns, and, by long custom, never interfere with the Guardian’s trials. A garrison oath, older than Kaelen’s own, reads in full: “The bridge is his.”
The weather
The Tempest is not weather the way other places have weather. It is closer to a resident with strong opinions (the weather). Storms arrive, deliberate, and leave. Kaelen reads them the way other soldiers read dispatches.
The beasts
Rainwraiths drift the gorge at dusk. Bolt-eels nest in the Underhold cisterns. The gargoyles on the Tempest Tower weep — actually weep, stone tears and all — before the worst storms. The full catalog lives in the fortress bestiary.
Source notes
- Stormhold, the Span, the Blackmere gorge, and the districts are original lore developed for this site, consistent with the app bio’s “storm fortress.”
- The Tempest’s personified weather is a deliberate fiction device; see methodology.
