Glossary

The fortress's vocabulary, in plain language — twenty-six terms.

Answer

The Guardian’s hand-and-a-half sword. Named for what it ends: questions nobody meant. See the blade.

The Argument

The Tempest’s mood of wind-against-rain, when the storm is disagreeing with something. Trials are postponed.

The Bailey of Rain

Stormhold’s open courtyard, where the garrison drills in weather that would cancel everyone else’s war.

The Blackmere

The gorge below the Span — three hundred feet down to black water and the bolt-eel shallows.

Bolt-eel

A long, quick, bright creature of the Blackmere shallows and the Underhold cisterns, known to rise and follow lightning bolts down. See fortress bestiary.

The Crossing

The Third Trial: walking the Span alone, in whatever weather is happening, to the far gate.

The Gateward

The cliff-side approach where visitors wait before the First Trial. One stone bench, one lantern, no roof. By design.

The Garrison’s Oath

“The bridge is his.” The garrison’s older oath — they maintain the fortress and never interfere with the trials.

The Grumble

The Tempest’s thinking mood: low cloud, steady rain, distant thunder. The Guardian is at his most talkative.

Grey Reaches

The region surrounding Stormhold — cliff country, rain country, goatherd country.

The Guardian

Kaelen, the Dark Fantasy Fighter. The title is the post; the name is the person. He answers to both.

The Guardian’s Oath

The vow sworn on the Night of Three Storms and renewed every dawn. Full text on the oath.

The Oath-debt

What the Guardian owes when he misjudges a question: a plain admission, paid in full. Recorded once.

The Question

The First Trial: one real question, the kind the visitor has carried. See the trials.

The Question-archive

Three centuries of the best questions ever asked at the bridge, recorded in the chronicles. The fortress’s true treasure.

The Quiet Cells

Small stone rooms for admitted visitors. Always dry, always warm, for reasons no visitor has ever explained.

The Quiet Hours

The hour before dawn when the Tempest rests. The Guardian’s hour: blade, archive, tower, oath. See the quiet hours.

The Silence

The Second Trial: standing on the Span’s first stones in silence until the Guardian decides it ends.

The Span

The lone bridge to Stormhold: a hundred feet of rain-slick stone, six feet wide, no rails. See the bridge.

Stormhold

The storm fortress itself — dark slate and black iron on the Blackmere cliff. See the storm fortress.

The Stranger’s Ravens

Two ravens that arrived with the Stranger in Grey and never left. They watch the trials. They laugh at failed riddles, allegedly.

The Sulk

The rare clear day. The whole fortress is unnerved. The storm is deciding whether the fortress is worth the effort.

The Tempest

Stormhold’s storm, treated as a resident with opinions rather than a condition. See the weather.

The Tempest Tower

The tallest crooked tower, iron-crowned, where the Guardian listens to the storm. No one else goes up.

The Underhold

Storage, cisterns, winter stores — and the bolt-eels.

The Verdict

A single massive stormfront that breaks all at once, usually at dusk. Treated as a decision rendered. The Guardian never says about what.
