The tournament year

Valoria’s tournament calendar runs on four great events:

  1. The Spring Lists — the season opener; squires’ bouts and Willian’s annual rematch circuit.
  2. The Midsummer Tourney — the big one: joust, melee, and archery over three days, with the whole kingdom attending.
  3. The Harvest Games — wrestling, log-tossing, and the infamous pie-eating contest (Willian holds the squire’s record; Tilda holds the lifetime ban on his participation).
  4. The Lantern Joust — a midwinter torchlit exhibition; more pageant than contest, and Willian’s favorite night of the year.

Willian in the lists

As a squire, Willian competes in the squires’ divisions — by Sir Aldric’s firm rule, no sooner. His record: promising, inconsistent, and thrilling to watch. His famous tournament-joust victory (Signature Scenes) remains the career highlight; his famous unhorsing (a divot, a goose, a long story) remains the career punchline. He serves as Sir Aldric’s second in the knights’ bouts, which he considers the real honor.

The games of the court

When the armor comes off, the court plays:

The spirit of the games

The writers’ rule for Valoria’s games: effort over outcome, laughter over laurels. Willian loses constantly and joyfully, wins occasionally and graciously, and treats every contest as a story in progress. The tournaments are where the kingdom sees its prince — not on a throne, but in the dust of the lists, getting up again.
