Duties & Adventures

The two halves of Willian's storybook life: the duties the crown assigns him, and the adventures his curiosity assigns him. Both site-written fiction — the duties invented, the adventures gleefully so.

The duties (assigned by the crown)

  1. Council attendance. Weekly, fidgety, and — to everyone’s surprise — occasionally brilliant.
  2. Village tours. Willian visits every village in Valoria twice a year, learns names, hears grievances, and is mobbed by children.
  3. Ceremonial appearances. Feasts, festivals, the Feast of Lanterns — the prince as the kingdom’s smiling face.
  4. Squire’s service. Assisting Sir Aldric at tournaments, carrying messages, mucking in where needed — no royal exemptions.
  5. The oath, daily. The Oath of the Banners isn’t a one-time event in the site’s stories; it’s a daily practice of showing up.

The adventures (assigned by curiosity)

  1. The midnight ride — bridge out, village stranded, Willian gone before the council finishes gasping. (Signature Scenes)
  2. The Bridge of Whispers — an unmapped bridge, a secret grove, a secret kept.
  3. The storm bell — a climbed tower, a hand-rung bell, a soaked prince.
  4. The goose dragon — the great dragon rumor of Elmsworth, investigated at personal risk, revealed as a large goose. Willian maintains the goose was “suspicious.”
  5. The millpond mediation — a dispute settled with one good question.

How duties become adventures

The writers’ rule: every duty contains the seed of an adventure, and every adventure ends in a duty performed. The village tour finds the washed-out bridge; the bridge repair becomes the midnight ride; the midnight ride ends with timber hauled beside villagers — duty, after all. This structure keeps the stories from splitting into “boring prince stuff” and “fun prince stuff”: it’s all prince stuff.

The adventure log (in-world)

Pippa maintains an unofficial log of Willian’s adventures, ranked by a strict scoring system (danger × mischief ÷ honey-cakes consumed). The current top three: the storm bell, the midnight ride, and the goose dragon — the last ranking high on mischief. Sir Aldric pretends not to know about the log. Sir Aldric has contributed entries.
