Palace Life Guide
New to the Rosewater Palace? Here's how life works at Katy's court — the rituals, the rooms, and the unwritten rules.
The daily rhythm
Palace life runs on Katy’s clock: dawn curtsy, morning garden walk, audiences with tea, the midday small dining room, the unscheduled mischief hour, and — immovable — Tea O’Clock at four. Learn the rhythm and you’ll never be lost; fight the rhythm and you’ll miss tea, which is worse.
The rooms that matter
- The Sunlit Ballroom — for dancing, twirling, and celebrations. Floor etiquette: twirl with joy, apologize with grace, never scuff on purpose.
- The state parlor — for formal tea. The good teacups live here; the best conversations happen in the kitchens anyway.
- The library — for quiet. Whispering allowed; crying at the good page expected.
- The Ribbon Hall — for remembering. Touch one ribbon, choose wisely, take hours.
Tea O’Clock, explained
At four, everything stops: audiences pause, letters wait, the gardeners come in from the rows. Tea is served, cake is mandatory, and conversation is the main event. First-timers are taught the Twirl Salute; regulars have favorite cups. There are no exceptions, and there have never needed to be.
Garden etiquette
Walk softly, greet the gardeners by name, never pick a rose without asking, and if Katy is doing her dawn walk, join quietly or wait — the circuit is hers until the tea is poured. Compliments to “Katy’s Blush” are always welcome and always overheard.
Ballroom basics
Arrive joyful, leave later than planned. The Twirl Salute is applause; the rain-watching waltz is reserved for storms; and if the music stops unexpectedly, keep dancing — it means Katy has an idea.
The unwritten rules
- Curtsy to everyone. Everyone.
- Never skip Tea O’Clock.
- A ribbon is always an appropriate gift.
- The tiara may be crooked; the kindness may not.
- If Katy asks about your life, answer honestly — she’ll remember, and she’ll ask after it next time.
For visiting storybook friends
Travelers from neighboring realms: present yourself at the gates, accept the Twirl Salute lesson with good humor, and know that your farewell ribbon is already being chosen. You will be written to. You will be missed. Come back before the roses forget your name.
