Friendships & Rivalries

The people she twirls with — and the people she twirls against, affectionately.

The queen: mentor, sovereign, co-conspirator

Royals queen is the axis of Katy’s court life: the sovereign she serves, the mentor she admires, and — when the throne room doors are closed — the co-conspirator she plots cake acquisitions with. Their private signal for “this ceremony needs livening up” is a story the staff tell in whispers and wide smiles.

Willian: the steady hand

Royals Willian is Katy’s closest working friendship: he holds the schedule, she holds the spirit. Their great ongoing debate — cake-first vs. schedule-first — has never been resolved and never needs to be. He has a standing invitation to every twirl; he has, exactly once, twirled.

The head baker: flour-dusted friendship

The palace’s head baker and Katy share the truest friendship in the building: weekly kitchen teas, brutal honesty about new recipes, and a mutual defense pact against anyone who suggests “just a small cake.” The baker’s veto over the royal schedule on cake days is the most respected power in the palace.

The head gardener: partners in bloom

Dawn garden walks made them confidants. The gardener teaches Katy the Latin names; Katy teaches the gardener that roses don’t care about Latin. “Katy’s Blush” — the deep-pink, gold-edged cultivar — is their joint masterpiece.

The dance instructor: beloved sparring partner

Katy’s playful rivalry with the palace dance instructor is legendary: he insists on perfect form; she insists the twirl is perfect because of the wobble. Their annual Twirl-Off draws the whole court. The score stands at eleven-all, with one disputed year.

The master of ribbons: the color wars

Her other great rivalry: the Master of Ribbons believes in restraint; Katy believes in more. Their “color wars” — competing to decorate the ballroom — are the court’s favorite spectator sport. The ballroom has never looked better, or pinker.

The pigeon: honorary courtier

After the twenty-minute interview and the honorary appointment, the palace pigeon became Katy’s most loyal follower — attending balcony teas, garden walks, and one state dinner (seated, controversially, near the queen). Rivalry status: none. The pigeon has never once disagreed with her.

Why it matters

Katy’s relationships are the proof of her philosophy: royalty as connection. Every friendship here — sovereign, staffer, sparring partner, pigeon — is conducted at the same warm eye level, and the court is visibly happier for it.
