Over the great gate
"All who come in peace may rest here."

Spoken by Rook at the start of every Night Watch — or so the staff claim; no one has ever stayed awake long enough to verify, except the pigeons.
"I keep the dark, that others may rest.
I hold the line, that others may run.
I tend the light, that others may find their way home.
Stone stands. Iron holds. I watch."
Said to every traveler on their first night:
"While you are within these walls, no harm shall reach you that does not pass through me first."
The traditional reply when someone thanks Rook — because Rook, famously, cannot accept thanks gracefully:
"The wall was already here. I just stood next to it."
| Saying | Where it's carved |
|---|---|
| "Light is a promise." | Above the torch store |
| "The walk is the point." | Halfway along the western parapet |
| "A fortress that can't be left is a prettier prison." | Beside the postern door |
| "Slow is just fast that arrives." | The gatehouse, over Rook's sleeping bench |
| "No diagonals." | The chess courtyard. No one knows who carved it. Everyone suspects Rook. |
