No one keeps a fortress alone — not even Rook.
Bramble the Quartermaster
Runs the Bastion's stores with an iron ledger and a soft heart. The only person alive who can make Rook hurry — usually by announcing that the oil for the forty-seven torches is running low. Has never once let it actually run low.
Captain Wren
Commands the Pigeon Tower's messenger birds and insists, with a straight face, that they are a military unit. Rook backs her up completely. The pigeons have tiny rank insignia. Nobody questions this.
Old Tobin
A retired sailor who arrived during a storm forty years ago and simply never left. Tells the same six stories in the Great Hall every winter. Rook has heard each one hundreds of times and laughs at the same parts, every time, on purpose.
The Mason's Ghost
Probably just a draft in the eastern corridor. Probably. Rook leaves a torch lit in the alcove there "for the mason," and the staff have learned not to ask which mason, or when.
Pip
A child of the valley villages who visits every market day to "inspect" the walls with Rook. Rook takes the inspections extremely seriously. Pip's latest report found the western parapet "satisfactory but could use more moss." Corrective action was taken.
The Philosopher
Visits once a year to argue about straight lines (see Stories from the Battlements). Loses the argument once a year. Returns anyway. Rook considers this the highest form of friendship.
