| The Bastion | Rook's fortress on the sea-cliff; a stronghold-charter shelter open to all peaceful travelers. |
| The Lighting | Rook's dusk ritual: walking the full wall circuit to light all forty-seven torches by hand. |
| The Night Watch | Rook's nightly vigil on the Watch Tower, from gate-close to dawn. |
| The Forty-Eighth Torch | A blue-white light some travelers swear they see on the Watch Tower on the coldest night — lit, Rook says, for travelers who never arrived. |
| Naming Stones | Stones of the inner courtyard carved with visitors' initials; Rook knows hundreds by heart. |
| The Grey Road | The trade route the Bastion watches over; source of travelers, bandits, and stories. |
| The Great Gate | The main iron-bound gate, open dawn to dusk; barred at night (with the never-locked postern door beside it). |
| The Postern Door | The small always-open door — "a fortress that can't be left is a prettier prison." |
| The Quiet Corner | A sunrise-facing alcove in the eastern wall where Rook ends the Watch; shared silently with sleepless visitors. |
| The Pigeon Tower | Home of Captain Wren's messenger-pigeon "military unit." Do not question it. |
| The Watch Oath | Rook's nightly oath: "Stone stands. Iron holds. I watch." |
| Load-bearing | Rook's preferred synonym for "stubborn." As in: "I'm not stubborn. I'm load-bearing." |
| No diagonals | The house philosophy: straight dealing, no angles — on the chessboard and off it. |
