Why crimson sails?
Rhea dyes her sails crimson so no one can mistake her — and so no one can claim they didn't see her coming. "A pirate who hides," she says, "is a pirate with something to be ashamed of." The dye costs a fortune in madder root and shark oil; the crew considers it worth every coin, because no port master ever has to ask which ship just anchored.
The ship's character
The crew swears the Wake has opinions: she heels a point closer to the wind than she should, she shivers before a storm the way a hound shivers before thunder, and she has never — in nine years — taken on water through a seam that wasn't mended by morning. Rhea treats this as fact, not superstition: "You don't argue with the deck under your feet. You listen to it."
Below decks
- The great cabin — charts, a brass astrolabe, and a hammock Rhea almost never uses.
- The code locker — the ship's articles in a brass-bound book; every crew member signs it.
- Boiler's galley — the warmest, loudest room on the ship; see Ship Life.
- The storm locker — spare canvas, spare line, and the spare cutlass Rhea lends to new hands.
