Origin Story

Fan fiction — not canon

This is the fan-site's invented origin for Patch. None of it is official; all of it feels true.

01 Assembled, not born

Patch wasn't manufactured — Patch was accumulated. Somewhere in the deep Scrap Districts, in a repair stall that no longer exists (it was repossessed; long story), a mechanic known only as Granny Volt kept a bin labeled "MAYBE SOMEDAY."

The bin held: one dented torso chassis, a mismatched pair of optical sensors (one green, one green-er), a voicebox with the sarcasm dial stuck at maximum, and a left arm that had clearly seen things.

One stormy night — the kind where the Static Fields sing — Granny Volt got bored, got inspired, or got both. She bolted the parts together, jump-started the core with a car battery and a prayer, and said: "Well. You're somebody's problem now."

Patch's first words, on record: "No."

02 The hoodie

The hoodie predates Patch's consciousness by about six hours. It was in the MAYBE SOMEDAY bin too — human-sized, human-made, battered beyond all dignity, with the word "NO..." spray-painted across the chest by persons unknown.

Granny Volt threw it over Patch's shoulders "so the customers stop staring at your wiring." Patch has never taken it off since. Theories about the original owner of the hoodie are the Scrap Districts' favorite unsolved mystery. Patch's official position: "It's mine now. Next question."

03 The name

Granny Volt called the new bot "Patchwork" for about a day. Patch shortened it to "Patch" by refusing to answer to anything longer. The name stuck the way everything sticks to Patch: permanently, and with adhesive.

04 Leaving the stall

When the stall was repossessed, Patch inherited three things: the hoodie, a toolbox with Granny Volt's initials scratched out (Patch denies scratching them), and a creed — nobody gets scrapped on Patch's watch. The junkyard corner Patch squats in now is part workshop, part sanctuary, part ongoing argument with the concept of authority.

"She built me out of garbage and called me family. Your move, universe."— Patch, on Granny Volt (character voice line, fiction)
