Biography

From a Los Angeles childhood to Suits, from the royal family to Archewell — the documented arc.

Los Angeles, 1981

Rachel Meghan Markle was born on 4 August 1981 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Doria Ragland, a social worker and yoga instructor, and Thomas Markle, a television lighting director. Her parents divorced when she was about six. She attended Hollywood Schoolhouse and then Immaculate Heart High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Los Angeles, graduating in 1999.

At eleven, she wrote to Procter & Gamble, then–First Lady Hillary Clinton, and others objecting to an Ivory dish-soap commercial whose tagline — “women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans” — she felt confined women to the kitchen. The episode was covered on Nick News; the company later changed the slogan to “people all over America.” The story has become a founding anecdote of her public advocacy, and it is one of the few childhood stories with contemporary documentation.

Northwestern and the long audition years

She studied at Northwestern University’s School of Communication, graduating in 2003 with a double major in theatre and international studies. During college she interned at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The acting decade that followed was the classic working-actor grind: a 2002 debut on General Hospital, small film and television parts, and a stint as a “briefcase model” on the game show Deal or No Deal (2006–2007). See Early Life & Education and The Suits Years.

Suits and The Tig

In 2011 she was cast as Rachel Zane, a whip-smart paralegal, on the USA Network legal drama Suits, filmed in Toronto. She stayed for seven seasons and 108 episodes, leaving after the seventh-season midseason finale in 2017. The role made her a recognizable television face and gave her a stable base in Toronto — the city where she would also run her second project.

In May 2014 she launched The Tig, a lifestyle website named after Tignanello wine, covering food, travel, fashion, and interviews with women she admired (“Tig Talk”). The site also carried her advocacy writing, including the essay “How To Be Both,” about reconciling red-carpet life with humanitarian field work. She closed it in April 2017.

The advocate, before the palace

Parallel to acting, Markle built a public advocacy record. She served as an Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership for UN Women (from 2014), delivering a noted address in March 2015 that opened, “I am proud to be a woman and a feminist.” She became a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada in 2016, traveling to Rwanda for the charity’s clean-water campaign and writing about girls’ education and menstrual health after a 2017 trip to India.

The royal years, 2017–2020

She met Prince Harry in July 2016, reportedly on a blind date; the relationship became public in late 2016. After a September 2017 Vanity Fair cover story and a first joint public appearance at the Invictus Games in Toronto, their engagement was announced on 27 November 2017. They married on 19 May 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle; she became the Duchess of Sussex (see The Wedding and Titles & Styles).

As a working royal she took on four patronages (January 2019), guest-edited the September 2019 issue of British Vogue (“Forces for Change”), launched a charity clothing capsule with Smart Works, and toured Australia and the Pacific in October 2018. Her son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born on 6 May 2019.

On 8 January 2020 the couple announced they would “step back” as senior royals and work toward financial independence. After a summit at Sandringham, Buckingham Palace confirmed they would no longer use HRH styles and would repay public funds spent on their Frogmore Cottage residence. Their final engagements took place in March 2020 (see Stepping Back).

Archewell and California

The couple settled in Montecito, California, and founded the Archewell Foundation (announced April 2020), with media arms Archewell Productions (a multi-year Netflix partnership announced September 2020; reported value figures were never confirmed) and Archewell Audio (a Spotify partnership announced December 2020, ended by mutual agreement in June 2023).

Her media output since 2020 includes the podcast Archetypes (12 episodes, 2022, winner of a People’s Choice Award), the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan (December 2022), the children’s book The Bench (June 2021), the lifestyle series With Love, Meghan (premiered March 2025), the podcast Confessions of a Female Founder (2025), and the lifestyle brand As Ever (2025). Her daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born on 4 June 2021.
