The short version of the man
Martin Tidewell is the kind of captain who knows every crew member’s birthday, mends his own sails, and refuses to leave a harbor until the lighthouse keeper’s cat has been fed. He believes the sea is not an enemy to be conquered but a neighbor to be on good terms with — a philosophy that has saved his ship more than once and nearly sunk it at least twice.
His motto, from his (fictional) logbook: “The sea keeps what it’s owed. Pay in respect, and it pays you back in sunrises.”
