All fictional. Every person on this page is an invented character from Martin’s fictional world. Any resemblance to real people is coincidental.

The standing crew

Brinley Okafor — First Mate

Ten years at Martin’s side and the only person aboard who can tell him “no” and live — because Martin listens. Brinley runs the deck with a voice like a foghorn and a memory for rigging that borders on supernatural. Keeps a private list titled Things the Captain Has Survived; it is four pages long and she adds to it monthly.

Pip Halloran — Navigator

Twenty-two years old, chart-obsessed, and the only navigator in the Blue Seas who can find the Lantern Isles in a singing fog by the smell of the tide-pools. Martin found Pip as a dock-rat stealing bread in Brass Anchorage and hired them on the spot — “anyone that hungry to know where things are belongs at my chart table.”

Mama Josie — Cook

Her name is not Josie and she is no one’s mother, but try telling the crew that. Her galley produces stews that have ended arguments, bread that has survived storms, and a biscuit so hard it is used as a doorstop and, once, as a weapon. Martin claims her cooking “could raise the wind.” The wind, on at least one recorded occasion, appears to have agreed.

Tomas “Splice” Rook — Boatswain

Can splice rope in the dark, in a gale, while asleep — allegedly all three at once, during the Squall of Nine Days. Teaches every new hand the bowline with the patience of a saint and the vocabulary of a boatswain.

The Watch — rotating deckhands

A dozen harbor folk who signed on for one voyage and stayed for ten: ex-fisherfolk, a runaway clerk who is now the best topman aboard, and one former Gullhaven harbormaster’s assistant who lost an election to a gull and never looked back.

Allies ashore

Keeper Anselm — Port Mercy lighthouse

Martin’s oldest friend. They were deckhands together forty years ago. Anselm keeps the light; Martin keeps Anselm’s cat fed. The arrangement is sacred.

Sef the Chandler — Port Mercy

Extends Martin unlimited credit, mentions it constantly, and has never once been asked to honor it. Sells him rope at cost and pretends it’s full price.

The Gull Parliament — Gullhaven

Not allies, exactly. More of an ongoing negotiation. Martin respects their sovereignty and their votes.

The Mistwhale “Old Lantern”

A particular mistwhale with a chipped dorsal glow-spot who has escorted the Second Dawn through three fogs. Martin insists it’s the same whale. The crew has stopped arguing.
