Banker Years
Four years at Rothschild & Cie — the chapter his critics never let him forget.
From inspector to banker
In 2008, after four years at the Inspectorate General of Finances, Macron resigned from the civil service and joined the Paris investment bank Rothschild & Cie as an investment banker. He worked on corporate mergers and acquisitions during the aftermath of the global financial crisis.
Why it matters
The Rothschild years became the defining biographical fact of Macron’s political image: for supporters, proof of private-sector competence; for critics — especially during the yellow-vest crisis — the origin of the “president of the rich” label. The job itself is documented; the moral judgments are politics, and this site records the former without adopting the latter.
The return to public service
In 2012, following François Hollande’s election, Macron left banking to become deputy secretary-general of the Élysée — the pivot from finance to power that set up everything after.
