2017 Election
The outsider who broke the system — spring 2017.
The first round — 23 April 2017
Eleven candidates stood. Macron led the first round ahead of Marine Le Pen (National Front), eliminating both mainstream parties’ candidates — the first time in the Fifth Republic that neither the left nor the right reached the runoff.
The runoff — 7 May 2017
Macron faced Marine Le Pen in the second round and won decisively with 66.10% of the vote. That evening he addressed supporters at the Louvre, promising: “I will be the president of all the French people.”
Why it was historic
- At 39, the youngest president in French history.
- The first president elected from outside the established parties under the Fifth Republic.
- A personal movement, founded thirteen months earlier, became the governing party.
The legislative wave
In June 2017, En Marche and its MoDem allies won 350 of 577 National Assembly seats — an absolute majority that gave the new president full legislative power.
