The Code
Written in one sitting, by lamplight, in excellent handwriting. Eight rules. The penalties are not discussed at dinner.
The Code is fan-written fiction for a fictional family. It is not a real document and prescribes nothing in the real world.
I. Family first, fossils second.
The family eats before the individual. The individual who forgets this eats alone, permanently.
II. The books always balance.
Frankie’s first lesson, the Don’s first rule. Every scale accounted for. The Professor’s arithmetic is final.
III. No one negotiates hungry.
All parties are fed before any sit-down begins. Disputes settled on an empty stomach are settled twice.
IV. Never hurry.
A Don never hurries; hurrying is for prey. (Joey Two-Claws is in permanent violation and permanently forgiven.)
V. The docks are neutral.
Bone Harbor belongs to the peace. Whoever fights on the piers answers to every crew at once.
VI. Forgive once.
Second chances exist: exactly one per dinosaur. Fossilize the lesson.
VII. Cold blood, warm heart.
Calm in the crisis, generous at the table. The Don’s whole philosophy in four words.
VIII. The table is long for a reason.
There is always room for one more chair — for the hungry, the loyal, and the reformed. The family grows at dinner.
