The art of floating
Anyone can swim. Floating — true, committed, hours-long floating — is a discipline.
Buoyancy as worldview
To float is to trust. The water holds you; you do not hold yourself. capybara's great insight — if the pond's philosophers (two frogs) are to be believed — is that most struggling is just refusing to be held. Stop kicking. The pond has you.
Technique
- Entry: slide, don't jump. The pond should barely notice.
- Position: on the back, paws folded, ears just above the waterline.
- Breath: slow enough that the ripples forget you're breathing.
- Duration: until the sun moves you. Literally.
Floating vs. drifting
Floating is staying; drifting is going. capybara practices both and distinguishes them thus: "Floating is home. Drifting is visiting." (fan-written line.)
