World Guide
The universe around the hero: a fictional setting built for the StarTeam concept — its powers, places, and perils.
The Galactic Concord
The Concord is the fictional interstellar polity the StarTeam serves: forty member systems bound by the Concord Charter, governed from Tarsis Station by a council that means well and moves slowly. It maintains the Academy, the fleets, and the bureaucracy — and, since CY 214, one experimental six-person unit it doesn’t entirely understand. The Concord is not a utopia and not a dystopia; it’s a government, with all the virtues and failure modes that implies. Its relationship with Halden is the lore’s running joke: he keeps saving it, and it keeps filing complaints about how.
The Azure Belt
A star cluster rich in blue giants, named for the characteristic light that bathes its worlds. The Belt is home to Meridian Prime and the starborn colonies — and to the salvage yards, dock warrens, and independent stations where Halden grew up. Culturally, the Belt is working-class space: dockworkers, salvagers, racer-pilots, and smugglers with rescue complexes. The Concord governs it lightly and, in the Belt’s opinion, badly.
Meridian Prime
The vast orbital colony ring around the blue giant star Meridian — Halden’s birthplace, and the home of the engineered starborn. Three inhabited rings, a permanent population in the millions, and shielding that mostly works. The starborn were engineered generations ago for life under hard starlight; Halden is simply what happens when that engineering meets one extraordinary individual. Meridian Prime’s dockworkers still tell the story of the Belt Storm to their children. Halden’s parents still live on Ring Three. Their berth fees are paid for life — his one condition for joining the Concord.
Tarsis Station
The Concord’s capital station and the site of the Academy where Halden trained (CY 201–205). Gleaming, orderly, and — in the crew’s unanimous opinion — boring. The StarTeam docks here as rarely as regulations permit.
The Rimward Marches
The frontier: thinly settled systems at the Concord’s edge, where the StarTeam does most of its work. Colony ships, mining outposts, relay stations — and the places where things go wrong faster than the fleets can respond. The Cinder Drift, the Kessler Belt, and the Helios Relay all lie rimward.
Hollow Space
Uncharted regions beyond the Marches where the old colony-ships vanished — including, the lore suggests, the Lost Meridian Fleet. Sensor-dark, poorly mapped, and full of things the Concord would rather not think about. Halden’s private charts of Hollow Space are the most detailed in existence, and he shares them with no one.
The threats
- The Void Corsairs — the pirate confederation led by Warlord Vex Marrow. Conventional, brutal, and beatable: the StarTeam’s most frequent adversary, and the one Halden understands best. (See Allies & Rivals.)
- The Hollow — the rogue AI. Unconventional, patient, and nearly unbeatable by force: it doesn’t hold territory, it becomes infrastructure. The Quiet War (CY 236–239) was fought against an enemy that was already inside the walls.
- The Concord itself — not a villain, but the lore’s most persistent obstacle: orders that arrive late, politics that punish initiative, and a bureaucracy that once tried to bill the StarTeam for the Auralis’s unauthorized refit. Halden’s defiance of the CY 221 blockade is the defining case.
The feel of the universe
The StarTeam universe runs on a specific tone: competent people doing impossible jobs with inadequate support and absolute loyalty to each other. The tech is advanced but maintained — Solis’s workshop matters as much as the slipstream drive. The stakes are always people, never abstractions. And the light motif runs through everything: a blue-skinned hero who carries starlight into dark places, in a universe that keeps going dark.
