Abilities
What a fictional starborn hero can do — and what it costs him. Every ability below is invented lore for the Vizlings character concept.
1. Stellar Resonance (passive)
Halden’s blue skin absorbs stellar radiation across a wide spectrum and stores it in specialized dermal lattice structures — the engineered starborn trait pushed to its extreme. In direct starlight he recharges continuously; in shadow or deep space he runs on reserves. This is the foundation every other ability builds on.
2. Nova Pulse (signature)
Stored starlight released as a directed kinetic burst — a shockwave of blue-white energy from his hands, his whole body, or a focused point. Variable yield: a gentle pulse can nudge a drifting escape pod; a full nova can vent a reactor or blind a fleet. His signature move is maximum force with zero fatalities — overwhelming, precise, non-lethal by design. See Abilities, Explained for the in-world mechanics.
3. Resonance Sight
By reading stellar radiation gradients, Halden can “see” energy flows — power conduits behind bulkheads, shield weak points, the charge state of enemy weapons. It doesn’t work through heavy shielding or in total darkness, and it gives him migraines if he holds it too long.
4. Starlight Mending (limited)
A low-level application of resonance: accelerating cellular repair in himself and, with contact and concentration, in others. It closes wounds and stabilizes trauma — it does not regrow tissue, cure disease, or work on the already dead. Sera Quinn’s standing rule: “Glow first, surgery second.”
5. Tactical Command
Not a superpower — a skill. Halden thinks in trajectories: where everything is going, not where it is. His Academy file reads “dangerous in the right direction.” In the field he runs the team like a single organism, and the Auralis crew trusts his calls because his calls have a habit of being right.
6. Zero-G Combat
Raised in the warrens and trained on Tarsis Station, Halden fights better without gravity than with it. Combined with short resonance bursts for mid-air redirection, he is effectively untouchable in open space — the origin of his call sign, “Comet.”
7. Piloting (small craft)
Not Lyra Vane’s equal — nobody is — but Halden is a rated pilot for shuttles, skiffs, and the Auralis’s auxiliary craft. His resonance sight gives him an edge in debris fields and storm conditions where instruments fail.
8. Flareburn (the limit)
The ability that isn’t one. Push past his reserves and the resonance turns inward, scorching his own nervous system. Symptoms: flickering glow, tremors, blackouts. Treatment: darkness, rest, time. There is no shortcut, and the lore refuses to invent one — the Meridian Gambit (CY 238) left permanent damage. His crewmates carry standing orders to put him under if he won’t stop himself.
Power in context
Against the threats of the StarTeam universe, Halden is a heavy hitter but not an army: one nova pulse won’t stop a fleet, and his reserves are finite. What makes him dangerous is judgment — knowing exactly how much light a situation needs. The Vex Marrow campaign (CY 228) is the textbook case: he ended a nine-month war with a single precisely-shaped pulse and zero fatalities. (See Missions.)
