Character Lore
The app's card says "Every story has a twist." This is the fan-written legend built from that seed — original fiction, not official canon.

The first lie
They say The Liar was born at the exact moment someone told the first story and left out the most important part. Not the whole truth — just the part that would have made the ending predictable. The omission curled up, put on a mask, and learned to walk.
The Liar doesn’t remember a childhood. Tricksters rarely do. There are only the stories, and the stories all begin with the words: “Now, this is the part nobody tells you…”
The mask collection
The Liar owns eleven masks and wears whichever one the story needs. The masks have names: the Innocent, the Confidant, the Rival, the Fool, the Oracle, the Stranger, the Friend, the Mirror, the Jester, the Ghost, and the one called No Mask — which is itself a mask, and the cruelest joke of all.
Each mask changes the voice, the posture, the appetite. Regulars at the Halfway House claim they can tell which mask is being worn by the shape of the smile. They cannot. That’s the point.
The Halfway House
The Liar keeps a carnival that exists between one story and the next — a midway of purple smoke and paper lanterns called the Halfway House. Every tent holds a story someone abandoned halfway through. The Liar finishes them, but never the way you expect.
Admission is free. The exit is wherever the twist leaves you.
The code of mischief
Ask The Liar why the lying, and you’ll get eleven answers and no answer. But observant fans have pieced together a code:
- Never lie to hurt. Trick the proud, tease the pompous, startle the certain — but the vulnerable get the truth, or at least a gentler story.
- Every twist must earn its turn. A surprise with no setup is a cheap trick; a surprise with a buried clue is art.
- The listener is always in on it — eventually. The best lies end with the audience laughing at themselves.
- Never claim a mask is a face. The Liar lies about everything except being a liar.
The rival nobody names
Every trickster has a straight man. The Liar’s is a figure fans call the Chronicler — a humorless archivist who writes down exactly what happened, in order, with footnotes. The Liar finds this both infuriating and irresistible, and spends half of eternity trying to get the Chronicler to laugh at a footnote. It hasn’t worked yet. Yet.
How this lore was made
This legend was written for this fan guide from the single seed of the app’s card description. The methodology page documents the process and the boundaries. If the character’s owner supplies an official backstory, this page will be updated to mark the difference between canon and fan fiction.
