Allies

The Chronicler

The humorless archivist who writes down exactly what happened, in order, with footnotes. Officially a rival; functionally the trickster’s straight man, editor, and favorite audience of one. The Liar has spent centuries trying to make the Chronicler laugh at a footnote. It hasn’t worked. Yet.

The Magpie

A trader in shiny plot twists, rare red herrings, and slightly-used cliffhangers. Supplies the Halfway House’s Card Room. Accepts payment in gasps.

The Audience

Not one person but a collective regular — everyone who ever leaned in at the words “now, this is the part nobody tells you.” The Liar’s most loyal ally and most frequent victim, often in the same evening.

Rivals

The Literalist

Believes every word, including the warnings not to. Immune to irony, which makes the Literalist both the hardest mark and the most dangerous — a twist told to the Literalist becomes, in their retelling, the plain truth.

The Spoiler

Knows every ending in advance and tells them at parties. The natural enemy of all tricksters. The Liar’s counter-move: invent a new ending on the spot, just to watch the Spoiler’s face.

The Eleventh Mask

Not a person but a standing challenge: the trick The Liar hasn’t pulled off yet. Every trickster’s true rival is the trick they can’t quite land.

The dynamic

The circle works because everyone needs everyone else. Without the Chronicler, the twists have no record. Without the Audience, no applause. Without the rivals, no stakes. The Liar would never admit this. The Chronicler has it in a footnote.
