Field Guide
Operating like the persona — readiness checklists, the go-bag, comms habits, and rest. Fictional and interpretive.
The readiness checklist
Run it weekly, in fiction or in life:
- [ ] Kit checked: everything you carry, accounted for and working
- [ ] Routes known: two ways to everywhere you go regularly
- [ ] Comms confirmed: the people who’d need to reach you, can
- [ ] Contingency named: the one thing most likely to go wrong, planned for
- [ ] Exit identified: including from commitments that stopped serving you
- [ ] Rest scheduled: the drill the persona itself keeps failing
The go-bag (fictional)
This guide’s version, kept deliberately mundane: water, a snack, a charger, a notebook, a pen, a small light, a basic first-aid kit, and cash. The persona’s fictional kit is fancier; the principle is identical — the bag you actually carry beats the kit you wish you had.
Comms habits
- Say the important thing first.
- Confirm it landed: “say back what you heard.”
- One channel per topic; don’t scatter the signal.
- Urgent gets a call; important gets a message; everything else waits.
- Debrief the week, even if only to yourself. Five questions — see After-Action.
The stand-down problem
The persona’s interpretive weakness is the guide’s most human chapter: not knowing how to rest. The field guide’s prescription is the persona’s own doctrine turned inward — schedule rest like a mission, with an objective (recovery), phases (unplug, sleep, do nothing), and a debrief (did it work?). Treat the asset — you — like you’d treat the team.
