What's Next
Half a trillion dollars of data centers, AI agents joining the workforce, and the race to AGI — what Altman says comes next, and what could stop it.
Stargate: the $500 billion bet
In January 2025, OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and partners announced Stargate: a venture to invest a reported $500 billion in U.S. AI infrastructure — data centers, power, chips — over several years, with reported involvement from UAE-linked capital (MGX). Altman called it the most important project of the era: the physical substrate for everything else.
The skepticism is proportional to the number: $500B exceeds the market value of most companies on Earth; the financing structure is complex and partially undisclosed; and analysts debate how much is committed capital versus aspirational headline. This site reports the announcement and the doubts side by side.
Agents “join the workforce”
In “Reflections” (January 2025), Altman wrote: “We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies.” OpenAI’s subsequent releases — operator-style agents, deep research, coding agents — are the opening moves of that prediction. Whether 2025 vindicates it is being tested in public.
The stated endgame
Altman’s public endgame, repeated across essays and interviews:
- AGI, then superintelligence — built safely, distributed broadly.
- Science accelerated — AI researchers compressing decades of discovery (medicine, materials, energy) into years.
- Abundance — the cost of intelligence and energy collapsing toward zero, with the gains shared (see “Moore’s Law for Everything”).
What could stop it — or change it
- The scaling question: whether bigger models keep getting proportionally smarter, or whether the paradigm plateaus.
- Energy and chips: the physical constraints behind Stargate.
- Regulation: the U.S., EU, and China are all writing rules that could reshape what labs may build and deploy.
- Competition: Anthropic, Google DeepMind, xAI, and Chinese labs are all racing the same track; OpenAI’s lead is real but not guaranteed.
- Governance: OpenAI’s own structure remains contested — including reported plans to convert the for-profit arm further toward a conventional company, which would reopen every 2019 promise to scrutiny.
- The trust question: the November 2023 crisis showed how fragile the human layer is. Institutions, not just models, have to survive the decade.
A note on predictions
This page describes Altman’s stated plans and the documented obstacles — not this site’s forecasts. The future is unwritten; anyone selling certainty about AGI timelines is selling something.
