Sam Altman in two minutes: the founder-investor who became the public face of the AI boom as CEO of OpenAI.

The two-minute version

Who: Samuel Harris Altman, born 22 April 1985 in Chicago, raised in St. Louis. American entrepreneur, investor, CEO of OpenAI.

Why he matters: He has sat at three successive centers of Silicon Valley power — founder (Loopt, 2005), kingmaker (president of Y Combinator, 2014–2019), and AI-lab chief (co-founder and CEO of OpenAI since 2015/2019). The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 made him the most visible executive of the generative-AI era.

The arc in five beats:

  1. 2005 — Drops out of Stanford after two years to build Loopt, a location-based social app, in Y Combinator’s very first batch. Loopt sells to Green Dot for $43.4 million in 2012.
  2. 2014–2019 — President of Y Combinator. Grows the accelerator, launches a $700M growth fund, and becomes one of the Valley’s most connected angel investors (Airbnb, Stripe, Reddit, Asana, Instacart among early bets).
  3. 2015 — Co-founds OpenAI as a nonprofit AI research lab with Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever and others, on a $1 billion pledge.
  4. 2019 — Becomes OpenAI’s CEO, converts it to a “capped-profit” company, and secures Microsoft’s first $1 billion investment.
  5. 2022–2023 — ChatGPT launches (30 Nov 2022) and becomes the fastest-adopted consumer product in history by several measures; GPT-4 follows (March 2023); in November 2023 the OpenAI board fires him — and reinstates him five days later after staff revolt and investor pressure.

The debates around him: whether AI capabilities are moving too fast for safety work to keep up; whether OpenAI’s capped-profit structure genuinely constrains profit-seeking; whether his side projects (Worldcoin’s iris-scanning identity network, big energy investments) are visionary infrastructure or overreach. Each is covered on its own page, factually.
