People
The co-founders, colleagues, backers, rivals, and family members who shape — and are shaped by — Altman's story.
Greg Brockman
co-founder / president of OpenAI
Former Stripe CTO who co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 and serves as its president. Removed as board chair during the November 2023 crisis, he resigned in solidarity with Altman and was reinstated alongside him. The two are OpenAI’s most durable leadership pair.
Ilya Sutskever
co-founder / former chief scientist
Deep-learning pioneer (AlexNet, sequence-to-sequence) who co-founded OpenAI and served as chief scientist. He voted to remove Altman in November 2023, then publicly regretted it and signed the staff letter calling for Altman’s return. He left OpenAI in May 2024 to found Safe Superintelligence Inc.
Elon Musk
co-founder turned adversary
Co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 and was its largest early donor. He departed the board in 2018, later citing conflicts with Tesla’s AI work. In 2024 Musk sued OpenAI and Altman, alleging abandonment of the nonprofit mission — OpenAI called the claims meritless; the litigation is ongoing as documented. Their relationship is now adversarial.
Mira Murati
former CTO
OpenAI’s chief technology officer (2018–2024) who served as interim CEO during the two days between Altman’s removal and Emmett Shear’s appointment in November 2023. She left OpenAI in September 2024 to found her own AI lab.
Paul Graham
Y Combinator co-founder / predecessor
Co-founded Y Combinator and hand-picked Altman as his successor as president in 2014. Graham has publicly defended Altman, including during the 2023 board crisis.
Jessica Livingston
Y Combinator co-founder
Co-founded Y Combinator with Graham; as a partner she worked closely with Altman during his presidency and the accelerator’s expansion years.
Satya Nadella
Microsoft CEO / key partner
Architect of Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI — the $1B (2019) and multi-year $10B (2023) investments. During the November 2023 crisis he hired Altman and Brockman to lead a new Microsoft AI research group, then welcomed their return to OpenAI, emerging as a central power broker of the episode.
Bret Taylor
board chair (post-crisis)
Former Salesforce co-CEO appointed chair of OpenAI’s reconstituted board in November 2023 after Altman’s reinstatement.
Larry Summers
board member (post-crisis)
Former U.S. Treasury Secretary appointed to OpenAI’s new board in November 2023.
Adam D’Angelo
board member / Quora CEO
The only pre-crisis director to remain on the board through the transition; Quora CEO and a reported figure in the tensions preceding the November 2023 removal. His exact role in the crisis is disputed — see The Board Crisis.
Helen Toner & Tasha McCauley
former board members
The independent directors who, with Sutskever and D’Angelo, voted to remove Altman in November 2023. Toner (a Georgetown AI-governance researcher) later wrote publicly about the board’s reasoning; both resigned in the reconstitution.
Emmett Shear
interim CEO, Nov 2023
Former Twitch CEO who served as OpenAI’s interim CEO for roughly 72 hours during the crisis before Altman’s reinstatement.
Alex Blania
Tools for Humanity CEO / Worldcoin co-founder
Co-founded Worldcoin with Altman in 2019 and leads Tools for Humanity, the company building the Orb identity network. See Worldcoin.
Dario Amodei
Anthropic CEO / former OpenAI VP
Led safety research at OpenAI before departing in 2020 to co-found Anthropic, now OpenAI’s most prominent rival lab. The two companies’ competition — and their differing safety philosophies — defines the current AI-lab landscape.
Oliver Mulherin
spouse
Software engineer; married Altman in January 2024. The couple announced the birth of their son in February 2025. Altman keeps family details private.
Jack Altman
brother
CEO and co-founder of Lattice, the HR-software company; co-founded the seed fund Hydrazine Capital with Sam. One of three Altman siblings.
