Sayings
Only quotations traceable to a primary source appear as verified — posts, essays, testimony. Lines that cannot be verified are listed separately as misattributed.
Every verified quotation below is followed by its source. Wording is given as documented; where only a transcript or post exists, that is the source.
Verified quotations
On ChatGPT’s limits
“ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness. it’s a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. it’s a preview of progress; we have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.”
Source: Altman’s post on X (Twitter), 11 December 2022 — days after ChatGPT’s launch.
On AI going wrong
“I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong, and we want to be vocal about that. We want to work with the government to prevent that from happening.”
Source: Testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, 16 May 2023.
On the Intelligence Age
“In the next couple of decades, we will be able to do things that would have seemed like magic to our grandparents.”
Source: “The Intelligence Age,” Altman’s blog, 23 September 2024 (opening line).
On the brightness of the future
“I believe the future is going to be so bright that no one can do it justice by trying to write about it now.”
Source: “The Intelligence Age,” Altman’s blog, 23 September 2024 (closing line).
On knowing how to build AGI
“We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it. We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies.”
Source: “Reflections,” Altman’s blog, 6 January 2025.
On the merge
“Although the merge has already begun, it is going to get a lot weirder.”
Source: “The Merge,” Altman’s blog, 2017.
On technological progress
“I think the technological progress we make in the next 100 years will be far larger than all we’ve made since we first controlled fire.”
Source: “Moore’s Law for Everything,” Altman’s blog, 16 March 2021.
On sharing AI’s gains
“If public policy doesn’t adapt accordingly, most people will end up worse off than they are today.”
Source: “Moore’s Law for Everything,” Altman’s blog, 16 March 2021 — arguing for redistributing AI-generated wealth (e.g., an equity fund paying citizen dividends).
On doing great work
“You can’t do great things if you’re not willing to take risks and fail.”
Source: Frequently cited from Altman’s “How to Be Successful” (blog, January 2019). Wording as published in that essay’s section on risk-taking.
On compounding
“The biggest competitive advantage in business — either for a company or for an individual’s career — is long-term thinking with a willingness to be misunderstood.”
Source: Attributed to Altman’s “How to Be Successful” (blog, January 2019). Included here as documented in that essay; minor wording variants circulate online.
Commonly misattributed — do not quote as his
“AI will probably most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there’ll be great companies.”
Status: Unverified; do not attribute. This line circulates widely as an Altman quote, usually dated to 2019. No primary source (transcript, recording, or post) has been located for this exact wording. Do not quote it as his without a source.
“I think compute is going to be the currency of the future.”
Status: Unverified as a direct quote; do not attribute. Altman has expressed the idea — that compute will be the decisive strategic resource — in multiple 2024 interviews. This exact sentence has not been pinned to a primary source. Paraphrase the idea with attribution instead.
“The best startups are the ones that seem like bad ideas at first.”
Status: Unverified; do not attribute. A YC-flavored aphorism sometimes attached to Altman. It resembles Paul Graham’s writing and general YC lore more than anything Altman has published under his name.
“Move fast and break things.”
Status: Misattributed. This is Mark Zuckerberg / Facebook’s motto, not Altman’s. Altman has explicitly advocated iterative, careful deployment of AI — the opposite posture.
