The Oprah Interview
The 7 March 2021 CBS broadcast — what was said on the record, the Palace's reply, and the passages that were later disputed. Presented as reported fact, with the disputes flagged.
The broadcast
Oprah with Meghan and Harry aired on CBS on 7 March 2021 (ITV in the UK the following evening), recorded at the couple’s home in Montecito. It was their first joint televised interview since the step-back, and the first extended on-record account from either of them of the events of 2019–2020.
What was said on the record
The following are the broadcast’s reported contents — things the couple said on camera, presented here as their account:
- The wedding timing: Meghan said she and Harry had married privately three days before the public ceremony, with the Archbishop of Canterbury officiating. (Lambeth Palace later confirmed the legal wedding was 19 May 2018; the discrepancy is documented on sayings.md.)
- Archie’s title: Meghan said there had been discussion of changing the convention so Archie would not have a princely title, and linked it to his security. (The title mechanics are the 1917 Letters Patent; see titles-styles.md.)
- The “concerns”: Meghan described “concerns and conversations” within the family about “how dark” Archie’s skin might be. Neither she nor Harry named who raised them, and neither used the word “racist” in the broadcast.
- Mental health: Meghan described experiencing suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy and said she had sought help; Harry described the institutional response as inadequate. (Their account.)
- The step-back: Harry said he had felt “trapped” in the institution and described his relationship with William as “space” at the time; he also said he loved William “to bits” and that time would heal things. (His account.)
- Security: Harry said his UK taxpayer-funded security had been removed in early 2020. (The subsequent legal dispute over his UK protection is covered on media-litigation.md.)
The Palace response
On 9 March 2021, Buckingham Palace issued a statement in Elizabeth II’s name:
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
The statement is quoted verbatim because it is the institution’s only substantive on-record response.
Disputed passages and corrections
- “Racist” vs. “unconscious bias”: press coverage widely framed the interview as an accusation of racism. In his January 2023 ITV interview with Tom Bradby, Harry said he had not used the word “racist” and described the remarks as “unconscious bias” — his correction, on the record.
- The private wedding: see above; the legal record is 19 May 2018.
- Archie’s title: the 1917 Letters Patent mechanism is documented on titles-styles.md; the claim of an active plan to change it for Archie specifically is the couple’s account.
- Commonwealth attitudes: reporting after the broadcast examined the couple’s claims about the institution’s handling of race; this site records the broadcast’s contents and the Palace response, not the commentary.
What this page does not do
It does not adjudicate who was right. The broadcast is a primary source for what the couple said; the Palace statement is a primary source for the institution’s response; the corrections are on-record. Everything else — commentary, anonymous briefings, press framing — is excluded by this site’s methodology.
