The Commonwealth Youth Role

The 2018 appointment that made Harry the Commonwealth's youth champion — what the role was, what he did with it, and where it stands.

The appointment

At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London in April 2018, Harry was appointed Commonwealth Youth Ambassador — a new role created to champion the voices of the Commonwealth’s young people (over 60% of the 56 member nations’ combined population is under 30). The appointment was announced alongside his grandmother’s expression of her “sincere wish” that Charles succeed her as Head of the Commonwealth.

After 2020

Commonwealth roles were among the positions affected by the step-back. In February 2021, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Harry’s honorary and patronage roles — including his Commonwealth appointments — would revert to the Queen. His Commonwealth Youth Ambassador role therefore ended in 2021. The 2021 announcement is a matter of Palace record; commentary about it is not repeated here.

The role’s place in the biography

The appointment was the institutional high-water mark of Harry’s working-royal career — a global role, created for him, at the age of 33 — and its 2021 return marks the formal end of that career. Both facts are documented; the significance readers attach to them is their own.
