The People Around Him
Family, the Epstein circle, and the figures of the interview, the lawsuit and the investigation. Every entry is neutral; where a person made allegations or denials, both are stated as such.
Queen Elizabeth II (1926–2022) On the record
His mother. She announced his naval enlistment, created him Duke of York on his wedding day, made him her personal aide-de-camp in 1984 — and, in 2019 and 2022, consented to and then enacted the withdrawal of his public roles. She was widely reported to have been personally fond of him; she also insisted, in 1982, that he remain with HMS Invincible rather than take a desk posting.
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921–2021) On the record
His father. A career naval officer himself, Philip’s path Andrew closely followed into the Royal Navy. Andrew helped escort the Queen into Westminster Abbey for Philip’s memorial service in March 2022 — his first major public appearance after stepping back.
King Charles III (b. 1948) On the record
His elder brother. As King, Charles reduced Andrew’s annuity (reported, April 2023), withdrew funding for his security (reported, 2024), initiated the formal removal of his style, titles and honours (30 October 2025), required the surrender of the Royal Lodge lease — and, on the day of Andrew’s arrest, said only that “the law must take its course.”
Sarah Ferguson (b. 1959) On the record
His former wife: married 23 July 1986, separated 1992, divorced 30 May 1996. Mother of his two daughters and, by his own 2008 account, his successful co-parent. She shared Royal Lodge with him from 2008 until 2026. In 2011 she apologized for letting Epstein pay off a debt of hers — while continuing to defend Andrew’s former friendship with him.
Princess Beatrice (b. 1988) On the record
His elder daughter. Central, unwillingly, to his Newsnight alibi: he said he had taken her to a PizzaExpress party in Woking on the evening in question. She was present at the pre-interview negotiation meeting at Buckingham Palace in November 2019.
Princess Eugenie (b. 1990) On the record
His younger daughter. Both daughters have remained publicly loyal and have continued to appear with their parents at family events; neither has made public statements about the allegations or the investigation.
Jeffrey Epstein (1953–2019) On the record
The American financier whose friendship with Andrew — begun, by Andrew’s account, in 1999 — destroyed Andrew’s public life. Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a person under 18, and died by suicide in a New York jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting federal sex-trafficking trial. Andrew has said he regrets the association; he continued it until at least 2010–11, by the evidence of photographs and released emails.
Ghislaine Maxwell (b. 1961) On the record
Epstein’s associate, convicted in December 2021 of sex trafficking of minors. Andrew said he met Epstein through Maxwell; Maxwell disputed his account, saying it was Ferguson who introduced them. She appears in the background of the widely published 2001 photograph of Andrew with Virginia Giuffre.
Virginia Giuffre (1983–2025) Allegation
Epstein accuser who alleged, from 2014–15, that she was trafficked to Andrew and had sex with him on three occasions including in London in 2001 when she was 17. Allegation — Andrew unequivocally denied it; the 2022 civil case settled with no admission of liability. Giuffre died by suicide in Australia in April 2025, as reported by major outlets; her posthumous memoir Nobody’s Girl was published in October 2025.
Emily Maitlis (b. 1970) On the record
The BBC Newsnight presenter who conducted the November 2019 interview. She and producer Sam McAlister negotiated access through Andrew’s private secretary Amanda Thirsk; Maitlis later said she believed the interview had the Queen’s approval — a claim disputed by unnamed palace sources.
Amanda Thirsk (b. ?) Reported
Andrew’s private secretary, the gatekeeper who arranged the Newsnight interview. She became chief executive of Pitch@Palace in November 2019 after his withdrawal and resigned in April 2020. In 2020 it was reported that his charitable trust was under Charity Commission scrutiny over £350,000 in payments to her.
John Healey (b. 1960) On the record
The UK Defence Secretary who, on 2 November 2025, confirmed that Andrew’s honorary rank of vice-admiral would be removed on the King’s direction — the last military rank to go, finalized that December.
