The Epstein Association
The friendship that ended a public royal life. This page keeps a hard line: the documented record is stated as fact; claims by any party are stated as claims. Nothing here goes beyond the evidence.
The friendship On the record
- Andrew said in the 2019 Newsnight interview that he met Jeffrey Epstein in 1999 through Ghislaine Maxwell. (His private secretary had said in 2011 that they met in the “early 1990s”; Maxwell herself disputed Andrew’s account, saying it was Sarah Ferguson who introduced them. The discrepancy is on the record; it is not resolved.)
- Epstein — an American financier — pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a person under the age of 18, and registered as a sex offender.
- In December 2010, Andrew was photographed walking with Epstein in New York’s Central Park during a visit to New York City — after the conviction.
- Emails disclosed in the Epstein files released in early 2026 indicate contact between the two men continued into 2011, and include a photograph of Andrew inside Epstein’s New York apartment. This contradicts the “end of the friendship in 2010” account Andrew gave in the Newsnight interview.
- In his November 2019 statement Andrew said: “I continue to unequivocally regret my ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein.” In the February 2022 joint settlement statement: “Prince Andrew regrets his association with Epstein.”
The allegations Allegation
Virginia Giuffre alleged that Epstein and Maxwell trafficked her to Andrew, and that she had sex with him on three occasions — including in London in 2001 when she was 17, and later in New York and on Little Saint James in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She alleged Epstein paid her $15,000 after the London encounter. Flight logs have been reported as placing Andrew and Giuffre in the locations she named.
Andrew unequivocally denied the allegations. In January 2015 Buckingham Palace stated that “any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue,” and repeated the denial thereafter.
Related claims, each labeled:
- Allegation A widely published photograph shows Andrew with his arm around Giuffre’s waist, Maxwell in the background. Andrew’s supporters have claimed it is fake or edited; most experts who have examined it consider it genuine (reported). A 2015 email from “G Maxwell” to Epstein, released in the files, appears to confirm that a photograph was taken. Andrew’s stated position is that he has no recollection of meeting Giuffre.
- Allegation In August 2019, court documents in the Giuffre–Maxwell defamation case recorded a second woman, Johanna Sjoberg, alleging Andrew placed his hand on her breast while posing for a photograph with his Spitting Image puppet in Epstein’s mansion.
- Allegation In January 2026, another Epstein victim alleged through her lawyer that she had been sent to the UK for a sexual encounter with Andrew at Royal Lodge in 2010, when she was in her twenties, and was subsequently shown around Buckingham Palace.
- Allegation In February 2026 the BBC reported on a 2011 legal letter from the Epstein files in which an exotic dancer alleged she was hired for $10,000 to perform at Epstein’s Florida home for him and Andrew in 2006 and was propositioned for a threesome; she said she was paid $2,000.
- Allegation In February 2026 the Daily Mail reported on a leaked 2025 U.S. security-service assessment describing Andrew as a Russian intelligence target of opportunity via Epstein — “useful idiot,” “weak link” language. This is a reported leak of an alleged assessment, two removes from verification, and is stated here only as such.
The surrounding associations Reported
- In December 2024 it was reported Andrew had invited Chris Yang (identified in legal documents as “H6”), a Chinese businessman, to events at royal residences; Yang had been barred from the UK in 2023 over alleged covert activity for the Chinese Communist Party. Andrew ceased all contact after government concerns were raised. A 2025 Telegraph report said UK intelligence deemed him a potential national-security risk over the relationship.
- In 2025 it was reported he had met Cai Qi, later a top-ranked Chinese Communist Party official, in London and Beijing in 2018–19 in connection with Pitch@Palace China’s expansion.
What this page does not do
It does not retail the memoir excerpts, the tabloid reconstructions, or the social-media theories. The rule is simple: if a claim is documented, it is stated with its source; if it is alleged, it carries the allegation label and any denial alongside it; if it is neither, it is not here.
