The Public Roles
Four roles across four decades — the naval officer, the trade envoy, the entrepreneurship promoter, and finally the private citizen. Each is summarized here and examined in depth on its own page.
The naval officer On the record
Twenty-two years in the Royal Navy (1979–2001), twelve of them on a full active-service sign-on. Helicopter pilot; Sea King co-pilot from HMS Invincible in the Falklands War, flying anti-submarine patrols and Exocet decoy missions; later a helicopter warfare instructor, a ship’s commander (HMS Cottesmore, 1993–94), and senior pilot of 815 Naval Air Squadron. Retired as a Commander. This is the one chapter of his public life about which the historical judgment is consistently favorable — his squadron commander called him “an excellent pilot and a very promising officer.”

The trade envoy On the record
The UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, 2001–2011: an unsalaried, expenses-paid role promoting British business at fairs and summits worldwide. The decade accumulated persistent criticism — over expenses (a reported £620,000 in 2010 alone), over associations with controversial figures (Gaddafi’s circle, Azerbaijan’s president, Tunisia’s regime), and finally over Epstein. He stepped down in July 2011. In 2026 the role returned to haunt him: released files and reporting allege he shared confidential official material with Epstein while serving as envoy — the basis of the ongoing misconduct-in-public-office investigation.

The entrepreneurship promoter Reported
Pitch@Palace, founded 2014: selected startup founders were invited to St James’s Palace to pitch investors, mentors and contacts, with bootcamps extending to China. For a few years it was presented as his post-envoy purpose. Within days of the November 2019 Newsnight interview, KPMG and Standard Chartered withdrew sponsorship; leadership changed; ownership passed through corporate vehicles; the UK arm was wound up in 2021 and the global entity entered dissolution in November 2025.

The private citizen On the record
Since 20 November 2019 he has undertaken no public duties. Since January 2022 he has held no military affiliations, no royal patronages, and no official use of “His Royal Highness.” Since November 2025 he has held no royal style, title or honour at all. What remains: eighth place in the line of succession (statutory, not removable by the palace), a Royal Navy pension, private means, and an ongoing police investigation in which he denies wrongdoing and no charges have been filed.
