Mission Stories
Three operations. Three archetypes. Every decision annotated with the tenet that governed it.
All missions below are fictional narratives from the character’s world — adventure stories, not reports.
1. Ghost — “The Meridian Ledger”
Objective: Recover a data drive from a 40th-floor corporate office without anyone knowing it was taken. Archetype: Ghost — the perfect mission is the one nobody hears about.
Sable looped forty cameras. Rook watched the street. Vesper entered through the maintenance core at 02:14, crossed the office in the three-second gaps, swapped the drive for an identical shell — same weight, same scuff marks — and was out by 02:41. The drive’s owner discovered the swap eleven days later, during an audit, and to this day doesn’t know when it happened.
Code annotations: Tenet two (silence is the mission) governed everything. Tenet six (know the ground) — Vesper had the floor plan memorized for a month. Tenet four (leave no trace) — the shell swap.
2. Snatch — “The Undermarket Run”
Objective: Extract a kidnapped dockworker from a black-market holding room beneath the storm drains. Archetype: Snatch — get in, get the person, get out.
The holding room had two guards, one camera, and a steel door. Vesper went in through the drain outflow — a swim she rehearsed twice — while Sable killed the camera and Rook tracked the guards’ rotation. She took the door’s hinges off with shims instead of breaking the lock. The guards woke up to an empty room, an intact door, and a headache they couldn’t explain. The dockworker was home for breakfast.
Code annotations: Tenet one (the civilian comes first) was the entire mission. Tenet three (never kill where capture serves) — both guards left alive and unaware. Tenet five (the squad comes home) — the abort pact was armed the whole way.
3. Shield — “The Harbor Fire”
Objective: Hold a burning warehouse’s stairwell long enough for trapped workers to escape. Archetype: Shield — sometimes stealth means being the wall.
This one went loud, and she hated it. A Crimson Lotus arson meant to destroy evidence trapped a night crew on the third floor. Vesper abandoned the covert approach, took the stairwell in full kit, and held it — smoke, heat, collapsing shelving — while Hana moved the workers out the back and Rook covered the exits. She was the last one out. The warehouse was a loss. Eleven people weren’t.
Code annotations: Tenet one overrode tenet two — civilians outrank silence. Tenet eight (do not become the threat) — she held the stairwell; she didn’t hunt the arsonists. That came later, quietly. See Operation Black Ember for the full story.
The pattern
Ghost, snatch, shield: three shapes every Specter Cell operation takes. Different objectives, different risks — same nine tenets underneath. The Timeline places these missions in her fictional chronology, and Operation Black Ember narrates the longest night of her career in full.
