Legends & Rumors

The city can't prove she exists. That hasn't stopped it from talking about her.

In-world folklore — fictional rumors from the character’s world, collected as the city tells them.

Why rumors are all there is

The Night Operations Division doesn’t publish victories, and the Code of Shadows demands no trace. So Kurohane City has no records of Military Ninja Fem — only stories. Dockworkers, night-shift nurses, insomniac taxi drivers: the people who work the hours she works have stitched a legend out of glimpses.

The rumors

The Red Thread. Old Town residents swear a figure in black with red seams crosses the rooftops on certain nights — always moving toward trouble, never away from it. Rooftop laundry goes missing on those nights. It always comes back, folded.

The Quiet Floor. Nurses at Harbor General tell new hires about the night a trauma case arrived with a field dressing already applied — military-grade, perfect pressure, no name on the chart. The ambulance crew never saw who did it.

The Camera Ghost. A security contractor claims one camera in the Meridian Tower loops the same three seconds every night at 02:14 — “like something walks through the frame and the frame politely looks away.” He was fired for saying it twice.

The Folded Note. Undermarket dealers pass around a story: a buyer who shorted a seller woke to find the money on the table, counted, with a note in block capitals — PAY WHAT YOU OWE. No one saw anyone enter. No one admits to writing it.

The Ember Coat. After the harbor warehouse fire, eleven workers told the same story: a figure in scorched black carried people down a burning stairwell and vanished before the fire crews arrived. The official report lists no rescuer. The workers pooled money for a plaque. It reads: TO THE ONE WHO STAYED.

What the rumors get right — and wrong

Right: she’s real (in-fiction), she works nights, she protects people who’ll never know her name. Wrong: the supernatural bits. She doesn’t teleport, doesn’t read minds, and definitely doesn’t fold laundry — that one’s just the wind, probably. Probably.

The rumor mill as camouflage

Vesper cultivates the legends deliberately. A city that believes in a ghost doesn’t look for a person. Every rumor is a layer of armor — and the Adversaries page explains who sees through it.
