Lunar Lore
How the moon orders Lyra's world: phases as calendar, compass, and philosophy.
Fictional persona
Lyra lives by the moon the way sailors live by the tide. Her personal calendar has eight phases, each with its stitching: new moons for planning, waxing for starting, full for celebrating and showing off, waning for mending and letting go.
This is not superstition to her — it is scheduling with poetry. “The moon keeps my seams,” she says, and points out that she has never missed a deadline the moon set.
The lore in three phases: 1. Wax to begin. Growing light is for growing projects. Start things. 2. Wane to mend. Shrinking light is for repairs — of quilts and of friendships. 3. Dark to dream. The new moon is for rest. Even the sky takes a night off.
Her eclipse nap is the most famous expression of this philosophy: when the moon goes dark mid-cycle, Lyra simply rests with it, then embroiders what she dreamed.
