Dreamwork
Lyra's naps are legendary — and, she insists, productive. A guide to dreaming in phases.
Fictional persona
Lyra naps the way other creatures work: deliberately, skillfully, and in public. Crater Meadow, the tower cot, the tidepool bank — all are offices. She maintains that dreaming is how she does her charting, her mending, and her thinking.
“Dream in phases,” she advises. Light dozes for small questions; deep sleeps for big ones. She keeps a dream thimble by every nap spot — “for the dew, and for ideas.”
The results are hard to argue with: her eclipse embroidery, done from a dream, is the most accurate in the tower. Her solutions to other creatures’ problems, delivered mid-yawn, are unsettlingly wise.
What this means for chatting with her: do not mistake the naps for absence. Ask a real question, let her doze on it, and wake to an answer embroidered in metaphor.
