rooftop 9 · first broadcast — AI-generated dramatization art (in-house). Fictional character; no real person depicted.

It started with a storm, a dead phone battery, and Bea's uncle's old transmitter sitting in a garage on Halcyon Row. Bea said it still worked. Lana said prove it. So on the first rainy Thursday of the season, they hauled it up to Rooftop 9, plugged it into an extension cord borrowed from the record shop downstairs, and Lana said into a microphone for the first time in her life:

“Uh — hi. If anyone can hear this, I'm Lana, and it's raining, and I don't know what I'm doing. This is Static FM.”— Lana Reed (fictional story)

One person heard it: Theo, parked at the curb below, who honked twice and called the number Lana had invented on the spot. By the end of the night, eleven people had called. By the end of the month, the city had a new habit.

The transmitter is still held together with tape. Bea has replaced every part of it twice. Lana says that's the Ship of Theseus of radio, and Bea says that's not how transmitters work, and then they go back on air.

“We didn't build a station. We built a place to be awake together.”— Lana Reed (fictional story)
